McDONALD -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Mental Health and Develop- mental Disabilities -- committee discharged, bill amended, ordered reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee AN ACT to amend the mental hygiene law, in relation to requiring the commissioner of developmental disabilities to define a career path for direct support professionals THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: 1 Section 1. The mental hygiene law is amended by adding a new section 2 16.39 to read as follows: 3 S 16.39 CAREER PATH FOR DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS. NOTWITHSTANDING 4 ANY PROVISIONS OF LAW TO THE CONTRARY, THE COMMISSIONER, IN CONJUNCTION 5 WITH NATIONAL AND STATE EXPERTS, SHALL CREATE A PUBLIC WORKFORCE INITI- 6 ATIVE TO DEFINE A CAREER PATH MODEL FOR DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS BY 7 BLENDING BEST PRACTICE LEARNING INITIATIVES INCLUDING THE UNIVERSITY OF 8 MINNESOTA'S COLLEGE OF DIRECT SUPPORT AND NEW YORK STATE DIRECT SUPPORT 9 PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES. FOR PROVIDER ORGANIZATIONS, THE DEPARTMENT 10 SHALL CONDUCT ONE-DAY REGIONAL LEARNING SEMINARS ON THE TREND OF DEVEL- 11 OPMENTALLY DISABLED SERVICES TOWARD COMPETENCY BASED TRAINING, THE ROLE 12 AND VALUE OF SKILL MENTORS, AND FACILITATING DIRECT SUPPORT PROFES- 13 SIONALS PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT. 14 S 2.
