          printed to be committed to the Committee on Local Government

        AN ACT to amend the village law and the public officers law, in relation
          to residency requirements for village justice of Laurel Hollow

          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section 1. Section 3-300 of the village law is amended by adding a new
     2  subdivision 33 to read as follows:
     3    33.  Notwithstanding  any  provisions of this chapter or other general
     4  law, local law, ordinance, or special act, the village board of trustees
     5  of the incorporated village of Laurel Hollow, in the county  of  Nassau,
     6  may,  by  resolution,  provide that the office of village justice and/or
     7  associate justice of such village may be held by a person who is  not  a
     8  resident  of  such village, provided that such person resides within the
     9  county of Nassau or the town of Huntington, in the county of Suffolk.
    10    § 2. Section 3 of the public officers law is amended by adding  a  new
    11  subdivision 73 to read as follows:
    12    73.  In  the  village  of  Laurel Hollow, in the county of Nassau, the
    13  provisions of this section requiring a person to be a  resident  of  the
    14  political subdivision or municipal corporation of the state for which he
    15  or she shall be chosen or within which his or her official functions are
    16  required  to  be  exercised, shall not prevent a person from holding the
    17  office of village justice and/or associate justice  of  the  village  of
    18  Laurel Hollow, provided that such person resides in the county of Nassau
    19  or  the  town  of Huntington, county of Suffolk.  Provided, however, the
    20  person performing the functions of village justice in any other  village
    21  shall be a resident of such village unless otherwise provided by law.
    22    § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
