        Introduced  by  Sen.  BROOKS -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
          printed to be committed to the Committee on Education
        AN ACT to amend the  education  law,  in  relation  to  school  district
          requirements for military-connected students
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
     1    Section 1. Section 305 of the education law is amended by adding a new
     2  subdivision 60 to read as follows:
     3    60. For purposes of monitoring academic progress of military-connected
     4  students, the commissioner shall cause  each  school  district  to:  (a)
     5  include  an  identifier  on  the  student record of a military-connected
     6  student, and (b) inform a classroom teacher of the enrollment of a mili-
     7  tary-connected student in any class taught by such teacher.  Each school
     8  district shall include in the  basic  educational  data  system  reports
     9  (BEDS),  the  number  of  military-connected  students  enrolled in such
    10  school district.  For purposes of this subdivision, a "military-connect-
    11  ed student" means a student enrolled in a public school  in  this  state
    12  who is a dependent of a member of the armed forces of the United States,
    13  including but not limited to members of the National Guard and Reserve.
    14    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
