Assembly Resolution No. 832 BY: M. of A. Dilan MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim March 2020, as Fibromyalgia Awareness Month in the State of New York WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official months that are set aside to increase awareness of health issues that affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim March 2020, as Fibromyalgia Awareness Month in the State of New York; and WHEREAS, Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues; researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way one's brain processes pain signals; and WHEREAS, Women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than men, and many people who have fibromyalgia also have tension headaches, temporomandibular joint disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and depression; and WHEREAS, Symptoms may begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress; in other cases, symptoms gradually accumulate over time with no single triggering event; and WHEREAS, According to the CDC, fibromyalgia affects about four million adults in the United States which is equivalent to approximately two percent of the adult population; of those four million cases, 90 percent of them are women; and WHEREAS, Although the exact cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown, it most likely involves a variety of factors working together, including, but not limited to, genetics, infections, and physical or emotional trauma; and WHEREAS, While there is no cure for fibromyalgia, a variety of medications can help control symptoms, as well as exercise, relaxation, and stress-reduction measures; and WHEREAS, Through public awareness, this Legislative Body seeks to minimize the devastating effects of fibromyalgia among all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim March 2020, as Fibromyalgia Awareness Month in the State of New York; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York.
