Assembly Resolution No. 791 BY: M. of A. Woerner MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim February 29, 2020, as Leap of Kindness Day in the State of New York WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official days that are set aside to promote and encourage positivity which benefit the lives of the citizens of the State of New York; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim Saturday, February 29, 2020, as Leap of Kindness Day in the State of New York; and WHEREAS, Leap of Kindness Day was invented in Saratoga County in 2016 when its Chamber of Commerce decided the extra day should be used to inspire everyone in the community to do something kind for someone else on the added day we all get on February 29th during a Leap Year; and WHEREAS, The Year 2020 is a Leap Year with 366 days; the celebration of Leap of Kindness Day has already spread to communities across the United States, Ireland and Canada, by way of local chambers of commerce taking the lead to encourage their members, neighbors and communities to do something kind for someone else on February 29, 2020; and WHEREAS, The members of this Legislative Body care deeply about their communities and often perform acts of kindness to support local nonprofits and charitable organizations; and WHEREAS, Leap of Kindness Day promotes actions, such as: thanking a first responder, teacher, veteran, direct care worker, or a nurse with a note, a gift or a meal; donating time, food, personal care items, or clothing to a nonprofit or charitable organization; and delivering flowers, gifts or food to nursing home residents, and senior citizen centers, to name a few; and WHEREAS, Kindness and respect for others is infectious; this rippling effect no matter how small, can truly leave a lasting impact on not only the receiver but the giver as well; and WHEREAS, It is imperative to promote days in which love, acceptance, non-violence and tolerance are observed, and to encourage all New Yorkers to participate in Leap of Kindness Day; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim Saturday, February 29, 2020, as Leap of Kindness Day in the State of New York; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York.
