Senate Resolution No. 1642

        COMMENDING   Dr.   Rafael   A.  Lantigua  for  his
        exceptional  achievements   and   contributions   to
        medicine and community service in New York State

  WHEREAS,   The   State  of  New  York  takes  pride  in  recognizing
outstanding individuals who have dedicated their lives to the betterment
of society through exemplary service in their professional and community
endeavors; and

  WHEREAS, Dr. Rafael A. Lantigua, a respected figure in  the  medical
community,  has  demonstrated  an  unwavering  commitment to healthcare,
education, and community  service,  enriching  the  lives  of  countless
individuals; and

  WHEREAS,  Dr. Rafael A. Lantigua, having received his medical degree
from the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo in 1972 and following his
mother's footsteps, migrated to New York City, where he has  since  made
significant contributions to the medical field; and

  WHEREAS,  After  completing  his  residency  in internal medicine at
Lincoln Hospital  and  an  endocrinology  fellowship  at  the  Rochester
University  School of Medicine, Dr. Rafael A. Lantigua has been a pillar
of the Columbia University community, serving in various roles including
Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Community Service; and

  WHEREAS,  His  extensive  research,  particularly  focusing  on  the
quality  of  life  of  minority  populations,  has  been instrumental in
advancing understanding and treatment of health issues  affecting  these
communities; and

  WHEREAS,  Dr. Rafael A. Lantigua's leadership in various medical and
community organizations, including his role as Director of the Office of
Community Service Programs at Columbia  University,  reflects  his  deep
dedication to improving healthcare access and education; and

  WHEREAS,  His  achievements  include serving as a co-investigator in
critical health research, publishing  over  100  medical  articles,  and
contributing  significantly  to studies on aging and Alzheimer's disease
among Latino populations; and

  WHEREAS, Dr. Lantigua's  commitment  to  community  service  extends
beyond  his medical practice, as evidenced by his roles in organizations
like the Dominican Medical Society, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense Fund,
and the Latino Commission on AIDS, among others; and

  WHEREAS, His numerous accolades, including the Arnold Gold Award  in
Humanism,  the  Ewig  Clinical Scholar Award, and recognition as a Grand
Marshall of the Dominican Parade, highlight his exceptional service  and
contributions; and

  WHEREAS,   Dr.  Lantigua's  international  recognition  and  awards,
including the Prestigious Premio Internacional al  Emigrante  Dominicano
Sr.  Oscar  De  La Renta, and the honor of having his bust placed in the

Boulevard del Dominicano en  el  Exterior  by  the  Dominican  Republic,
signify his far-reaching impact; now, therefore, be it

  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend  Dr.  Rafael  A.  Lantigua  for   his   profound   and   lasting
contributions  to  the  field  of  medicine, his dedication to community
service, and his exemplary role as a leader and  educator  in  New  York
State; and be it further

  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. Rafael A. Lantigua.
