Senate Resolution No. 1423 BY: Senator HINCHEY COMMENDING Fredrick Warren Crosby posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this esteemed Body; and WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Fredrick Warren Crosby posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers; and WHEREAS, Born on October 10, 1919, Fredrick Crosby was raised in Canaan, New York by his parents Fredrick and Barbara Crosby; after attending the Canaan School District, he was employed as a carpenter; and WHEREAS, Entering the United States Navy on October 10, 1942, Fredrick Crosby received further training as a carpenter after his initial training; then, he was assigned to the Seabees in the Pacific Theater of Operations; and WHEREAS, Traveling internationally to serve the Nation, Fredrick Crosby's unit, the 41st Naval Construction Battalion, was located on the Aleutian Island at Kodiak Naval base and then in Guam; and WHEREAS, After his courageous service of over three years during World War II, Fredrick Crosby earned the title of Carpenter's Mate 2nd Class; and WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service in December of 1945, Fredrick Crosby was honorably discharged at Lido Beach, Long Island; and WHEREAS, Meeting his lifelong partner upon his homecoming, Fredrick Crosby married Elizabeth Bailey on December 27, 1945; they had three children, Fred, Karen and Deb; and WHEREAS, Passionate about his many endeavors, Fredrick Crosby worked as a farmer, self-employed carpenter, for the Berkshire Farm for 14 years, and lastly the Columbia County Highway Department; and WHEREAS, Active in his community, Fredrick Crosby was a charter member of the Canaan Conservation Club and served as its President and Treasurer; and WHEREAS, Connected to nature, Fredrick Crosby enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening; he was fondly remembered to plant potatoes each year and host a clam bake on Labor Day weekend; and WHEREAS, Fredrick Crosby died on May 26, 1981, at the age of 61 years old; and WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing in action; and WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad, Fredrick Crosby demonstrated his love for his country and merits forevermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commend Fredrick Warren Crosby posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the family of Fredrick Warren Crosby.
