       AN  ACT  to  amend  the  education  law, in relation to including a high
         school member on the board of regents
         THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
       BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
    1    Section 1. Section 202 of the education law is amended by adding a new
    2  subdivision 1-a to read as follows:
    3    1-A.  IN  ADDITION TO THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS SET FORTH
    4  IN SUBDIVISION ONE OF THIS SECTION THERE SHALL BE ONE EX OFFICIO STUDENT
    5  MEMBER OF SUCH BOARD. SUCH STUDENT MEMBER SHALL BE A  SENIOR  OR  JUNIOR
    6  ATTENDING  A  PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL IN THIS STATE AND SHALL BE APPOINTED BY
    7  THE GOVERNOR FROM A LIST OF THREE CANDIDATES RECOMMENDED  BY  THE  STATE
    8  ASSOCIATION  OF  STUDENT  COUNCILS,  SUBJECT TO CONFIRMATION BY MAJORITY
    9  VOTE OF SUCH BOARD.  SUCH STUDENT MEMBER SHALL BE A NON-VOTING MEMBER OF
   10  SUCH BOARD.  THE TERM OF SUCH STUDENT MEMBER SHALL BE FOR ONE  YEAR  AND
   11  SHALL  BEGIN  ON THE JULY FIRST PRECEDING THE SENIOR YEAR OR JUNIOR YEAR
   12  OF SUCH STUDENT MEMBER AND END THE FOLLOWING JUNE THIRTIETH.  A  VACANCY
   13  IN  SUCH  OFFICE  SHALL  BE  FILLED  IN  THE SAME MANNER AS THE ORIGINAL
   14  APPOINTMENT FOR THE REMAINDER OF SUCH TERM.
   15    S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
