       AN  ACT  to  amend  the education law, in relation to requiring that the
         course of instruction for  students  in  grades  kindergarten  through
         twelve include a component on environmental education
         THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
       BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
    1    Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 815 to
    2  read as follows:
    3    S 815. INSTRUCTION  IN  ENVIRONMENTAL  EDUCATION.  THE  REGENTS  SHALL
    4  ENSURE  THAT  THE  COURSE  OF INSTRUCTION IN GRADES KINDERGARTEN THROUGH
    5  TWELVE INCLUDES A COMPONENT ON ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION.  SUCH  COMPONENT
    6  SHALL INSTRUCT STUDENTS ON TOPICS INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, RECYCL-
    7  ING,  ENERGY  EFFICIENCY,  CONSERVATION, AND CLIMATE CHANGE. THE REGENTS
    8  SHALL DETERMINE HOW TO INCORPORATE SUCH COMPONENT IN EXISTING  CURRICULA
    9  AND  THE  COMMISSIONER  SHALL PROMULGATE ANY REGULATIONS NEEDED TO CARRY
   10  OUT SUCH DETERMINATION OF THE REGENTS.
   11    S 2. This act shall take  effect  immediately,  provided  that  school
   12  districts shall be in full compliance with the provisions of this act by
   13  July 1, 2012.
