STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 4500 2017-2018 Regular Sessions IN ASSEMBLY February 2, 2017 ___________ Introduced by M. of A. GOTTFRIED, GUNTHER, PRETLOW -- read once and referred to the Committee on Higher Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to the practice of regis- tered professional nursing by a certified registered nurse anesthetist The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Section 6902 of the education law is amended by adding a 2 new subdivision 4 to read as follows: 3 4. (a) The practice of registered professional nursing by a certified 4 registered nurse anesthetist may include the ability to prescribe during 5 the peri-anesthetic period. The certified registered nurse anesthetist 6 shall obtain a certificate from the department upon successfully 7 completing a program including an appropriate pharmacology component, or 8 its equivalent, as established by the commissioner's regulations, prior 9 to prescribing under this subdivision. The certificate shall state 10 whether the certified registered nurse anesthetist has successfully 11 completed such a program or equivalent and is authorized to prescribe 12 under this subdivision. 13 (b) For purposes of this article the term "certified registered nurse 14 anesthetist" shall mean a registered professional nurse licensed in this 15 state: who has satisfactorily completed educational preparation for the 16 provision of anesthesia services in a program registered by the depart- 17 ment or in a program accredited by a national body recognized by the 18 department or determined by the department to be equivalent; and who 19 submits evidence in a manner and form prescribed by the department of 20 current certification or recertification by a national certifying body 21 recognized by the department. 22 § 2.
