CUSICK, ABINANTI, WEPRIN, GALEF, SKOUFIS -- read once and referred to the Committee on Election Law -- recommitted to the Committee on Election Law in accordance with Assembly Rule 3, sec. 2 -- committee discharged, bill amended, ordered reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee AN ACT to amend the election law, in relation to increasing the number of registrants an election district may contain with the approval of the county board of elections; authorizes increase of county committee The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Paragraph a of subdivision 3 of section 4-100 of the 2 election law, as amended by chapter 659 of the laws of 1994, is amended 3 to read as follows: 4 a. Each election district shall be in compact form and may not be 5 partly within and partly without a ward, town, city, a village which has 6 five thousand or more inhabitants and is wholly within one town, or a 7 county legislative, assembly, senatorial or congressional district. 8 Except as provided in paragraph b of this subdivision, election district 9 boundaries, other than those boundaries which are coterminous with the 10 boundaries of those political subdivisions mentioned in this paragraph, 11 must be streets, rivers, railroad lines or other permanent character- 12 istics of the landscape which are clearly visible to any person without 13 the need to use any technical or mechanical device. An election district 14 shall contain not more than nine hundred fifty registrants (excluding 15 registrants in inactive status) or, with the approval of the county 16 board of elections, not more than [eleven hundred fifty] two thousand 17 registrants (excluding registrants in inactive status), but any election 18 district may be divided for the convenience of the voters. 19 § 2. Subdivision 1 of section 2-104 of the election law, as amended by 20 chapter 659 of the laws of 1994, is amended to read as follows: EXPLANATION--Matter in italics (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [] is old law to be omitted.
