CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Senate Resolution urging the United States Congress to strengthen gun control laws.

Whereas, On December 14, 2012, a man armed with a semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle and two pistols rampaged through Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut killing 20 young children, who were six and seven years old, and six adults before killing himself; and

Whereas, Since January 2011, there have been more than 70 shootings in the United States where three or more people were injured or killed; and

Whereas, An average of 31,593 people die from gun violence each year in the United States, with approximately 12,179 of these people being murdered, meaning an average of 33 people are murdered every day in this country due to gun violence, according to the most recent data available; and

Whereas, In 1994, Congress passed the federal Assault Weapons Ban to prohibit high-capacity magazines; however that ban expired in 2004 and has not been reinstated; and

Whereas, It is necessary for Congress to address the issue of gun violence by strengthening gun control laws and requiring more thorough background checks for gun purchases in order to prevent horrific shootings, such as the Sandy Hook shooting, from occurring again in this country; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  The Senate of this State respectfully urges the United States Congress to strengthen gun control laws in this country.
