STATEMENT

This resolution memorializes the Congress to pass H.R.2594 which provides plot allowances for certain spouses and children of certain veterans who are buried in state cemeteries.  H.R.2594 is sponsored by Congressman Scott Garrett of New Jersey and introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on May 21, 2009.  Additional sponsors from New Jersey include Congressmen John H. Adler, Robert E. Andrews, Rodney P. Frelinghuysen, Leonard Lance, Frank A. LoBiondo, Bill Pascrell, Jr., Donald M. Payne, and Christopher H. Smith.

Currently, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs is authorized to pay a plot allowance of $300 to a state for expenses incurred in the burial of an eligible veteran, but not the veteran's spouse or children.  Eligible spouses and children may be buried at the same site as the veteran, but there is no plot allowance for interment.  H.R.2594 will direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to provide a $300 plot allowance for spouses and certain children of certain veterans buried in state cemeteries.
