SYNOPSIS
Designates portion of State Highway Route 36 in Borough of Eatontown as "Mayor Gerald J. Tarantolo Boulevard."

An Act designating the portion of State Highway Route 36 in the Borough of Eatontown as the "Mayor Gerald J. Tarantolo Boulevard."
Whereas, The Honorable Gerald "Gerry" J. Tarantolo, a man known for ethics, vision, and compassion, has served the Borough of Eatontown for over 40 years; and
Whereas, As a pillar of the community, Mayor Tarantolo is a retired electrical engineer, who has lived in the Borough of Eatontown for over 50 years with his wife and children; and
Whereas, An honorable and courageous man who enjoys serving others, Mayor Tarantolo began his career in service by serving the country and the State as a servicemember in the United States Air Force and the New Jersey Air National Guard; and
Whereas, Mayor Tarantolo has provided the Borough of Eatontown with a lifetime of public service, beginning in 1975 with his election to the Eatontown Board of Education, on which he served for 10 years with three years as the President of the Eatontown Board of Education; and
Whereas, In 1985, Mayor Tarantolo was elected to fill an unexpired term on the Eatontown Borough Council and was then re-elected to the council four more times; and
Whereas, In 1998, Mayor Tarantolo was elected to the first of four terms as Mayor of the Borough of Eatontown; and
Whereas, During his tenure, Mayor Tarantolo established the Eatontown Economic Development Advisory Committee and the Eatontown Green Team, which was created to implement environmental policies, programs, and education initiatives in the Borough of Eatontown; and
Whereas, Mayor Tarantolo also served on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors, as Chairman of the Two River Council of Mayors, and as First Vice President of the New Jersey League of Municipalities; and
Whereas, In honor of his service to the community, in 2007, Mayor Tarantolo was awarded the Eastern Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce Spinnaker Award for Public Service and, in 2010, he was awarded the Social Community Activities Network Humanitarian Award; and
Whereas, With an unwavering devotion to the residents of the Borough of Eatontown and Monmouth County, it is fitting and proper for the Legislature to honor the public service career of Mayor Gerald J. Tarantolo by designating the portion of State Highway Route No. 36 in the Borough of Eatontown as the "Mayor Gerald J. Tarantolo Boulevard"; now, therefore,
Be It
Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of
the State of New Jersey:
1. The Commissioner of Transportation shall designate the portion of State Highway Route 36, extending from milepost 0 to milepost 2.56, in the Borough of Eatontown in Monmouth County as the "Mayor Gerald J. Tarantolo Boulevard" and erect appropriate signs bearing this designation and dedication.
2. State or other public funds shall not be used for producing, purchasing, or erecting signs bearing the designation established pursuant to section 1 of this act. The Commissioner of Transportation is authorized to receive gifts, grants, or other financial assistance from private sources for the purpose of funding or reimbursing the Department of Transportation for the costs associated with producing, purchasing, erecting, and maintaining signs bearing the designation established pursuant to section 1 of this act and entering into agreements related thereto, with private sources, including but not limited to non-governmental non-profit, educational, or charitable entities or institutions. Work shall not proceed and funding shall not be accepted by the Department of Transportation until an agreement has been reached with a responsible party for paying the costs associated with producing, purchasing, erecting, and maintaining the signs.
3. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill designates State Highway Route 36 in the Borough Eatontown in Monmouth County as the "Mayoral Gerald J. Tarantolo Boulevard" to honor the public service career of Mayor Gerald J. Tarantolo, who is a pillar of the Eatontown community previously serving the Borough of Eatontown in various positions for over 40 years.
Consistent with Department of Transportation policy and other road designations, the bill provides that State or other public funds are not to be used for producing, purchasing, or erecting signs bearing the designation for the "Mayor Gerald J. Tarantolo Boulevard." The Commissioner of Transportation is authorized to receive financial assistance from private sources for the costs associated with producing, purchasing, erecting, and maintaining signs bearing the designation.
