SYNOPSIS

     Honors accomplishments of New Jersey State Guard during 1941 through 1945.

     As reported by the Assembly Military and Veterans' Affairs Committee on February 11, 2013, with amendments.

  

An Assembly Resolution honoring the accomplishments of the New Jersey State Guard ¹during 1941 through 1945, inclusive¹.

 

Whereas, In the absence from the states of the National Guard when called into federal service, the Congress of the United States authorized state defense forces to carry out the constitutional responsibilities of protecting life and property, including the protection of vital installations and facilities, against internal threat or sabotage; and

Whereas, The New Jersey State Guard was organized in 1941 by Executive Order, thereby providing a force not subject to call into federal service, which force has its roots in the minutemen of the colonial era and the well-regulated militias envisioned by the framers of the United States Constitution; and

Whereas, Much of the State Guard's initial membership consisted of veterans of World War I, who often had to leave businesses or established jobs to serve on active duty; and

Whereas, Motivated by a sense of civic duty, members committed to regular training and patrols that took them away from their families and friends; and

Whereas, During World War II, the State Guard was charged primarily with the protection of vital installations, such as bridges, reservoirs, and power plants; and

Whereas, The State Guard reached aggregate strength in 1945 of 2,076 officers and enlisted men, with over 10,000 men serving the State Guard from 1941 through 1945; and

Whereas, The State Guard helped to foster patriotic pride in New Jersey by its presence in numerous parades and ceremonies, especially in connection with the awarding of United States Government decorations to members of the Armed Forces of the United States; and

Whereas, More than 2,000 members entered the Armed Forces of the United States from the State Guard between 1941 and 1945, thereby representing admirably and well their home State of New Jersey; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    That this House honors the accomplishments of the New Jersey State Guard and recognizes their contributions to the State of New Jersey ¹during 1941 through 1945, inclusive¹.

     2.    That a duly authenticated copy of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the commander of the New Jersey Naval Militia Joint Command, to the president of the New Jersey Naval Militia Foundation, and to the curator of the National Guard Militia Museum of New Jersey.
