SYNOPSIS
Honors Korean veterans of Vietnam War.

An Assembly Resolution honoring the Korean veterans of the Vietnam War.
Whereas, The United States holds as it highest ideals freedom, democracy, and self-determination and strives to spread these ideals to every man, woman, and child on earth; and
Whereas, The United States entered the Vietnam War to prevent a Communist takeover of South Vietnam and more than three million American troops fought bravely in the cause of freedom and democracy; and
Whereas, 58,193 American soldiers were killed, more than 300,000 were wounded, and 2,000 American troops are missing in action; and
Whereas, Vietnam veterans faced a harsh, unwelcoming, and angry public when they returned to American soil despite their valiant and heroic service; and
Whereas, Soldiers from the Republic of Korea were sent to the Vietnam War to support American troops and the cause of freedom at the request of the United States; and
Whereas, 325,517 Korean soldiers were in Vietnam from 1964 until the last soldier left Saigon on March 23, 1973; and
Whereas, 5,099 Korean soldiers were killed and 10,962 Korean soldiers were injured; and
Whereas, Korean troops were known throughout the conflict for their effectiveness, and they fought alongside American troops in all areas of the theater; and
Whereas, It is estimated that 20 percent of Korean veterans of the Vietnam War suffer significant injuries, including post-traumatic stress disorder, total disability, and the effects of the toxic defoliant Agent Orange; and
Whereas, 1,300 Korean veterans of the Vietnam War are estimated to currently live in the United States; and
Whereas, Approximately 95 percent of Korean veterans of the Vietnam War in the United States are American citizens; and
Whereas, The citizens of New Jersey owe their appreciation to all veterans who have fought for our liberty, many paying the ultimate sacrifice; and
Whereas, Korean veterans of the Vietnam War are especially dedicated to the ideals of freedom and democracy; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House honors Korean veterans of the Vietnam War for their service to the American people and the citizens of New Jersey.
2. This House honors all American veterans who fought in the Vietnam War.
3. Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested to by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States Senate, the Speaker and Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, each member of Congress elected from this State, and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in New York.
STATEMENT
This Assembly resolution honors the Korean veterans of the Vietnam War. Approximately 95% of Korean veterans, who live in the United States, are currently United States citizens, and of those members an estimated 20 percent suffer from long-term health effects that directly result from their participation in the Vietnam War. These lasting war injuries include post-traumatic stress disorder, total disability, and the effects of the toxic defoliant Agent Orange. Throughout the war, Koreans were essential in supporting the United States war efforts. With this resolution, the New Jersey General Assembly honors the Korean veterans of the Vietnam War for their service to the American people and to the citizens of this State.
