SYNOPSIS

Designates first week of May as "National Travel and Tourism Week" in NJ.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Joint Resolution designating the first week of May each year as "National Travel and Tourism Week."

Whereas, The first full week of May is annually recognized in the United States as "National Travel and Tourism Week"; and

Whereas, "National Travel and Tourism Week" was first established when the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution in 1983 designating the week to be celebrated in May, and President Ronald Reagan signed a Presidential Proclamation urging citizens to observe the week with "the appropriate ceremonies and activities"; and

Whereas, Since the tradition was first celebrated in 1984, the United States travel community has collectively marked the event in a number of creative ways with localized events organized across cities and states and by travel businesses nationwide to champion the power of travel; and

Whereas, Celebrating "National Travel and Tourism Week" unites the tourism community and also reminds everyone, from lawmakers to media, how powerful the travel industry is in destinations across the country and how essential tourism is to this country's economy; and

Whereas, New Jersey has a rich and storied history and is home to a host of diverse artistic, cultural, and historic institutions, including performing arts groups and centers and museums; entertainment venues, including racetracks and casinos; beloved natural destinations, including State and national parks and beautiful beaches; a range of recreational activities and offerings, including professional, collegiate, and amateur sports; and agricultural tourism offerings, such as farm-based festivals and winery tours; and

WHEREAS, The tourism industry represents a vital component of New Jersey's overall economy, functioning as the third-largest source of private-sector employment in the State and providing billions of dollars in economic activity and revenue in the form of taxes; and

Whereas, There is a general sense of pride that results from New Jersey's desirability as a destination for millions of vacationers; and

Whereas, Given the fact that tourism is a vital component of the State's economy, an essential contributor to the livelihood of State residents, and a facilitator of State pride and community, it is reasonable and appropriate for the State and its residents to celebrate "National Travel and Tourism Week"; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    The first full week of May in each year is designated as "National Travel and Tourism Week" in the State of New Jersey.

     2.    The Governor shall annually issue a proclamation establishing the first full week of May in each year as "National Travel and Tourism Week" in the State of New Jersey, and, with the Legislature, shall call upon the people of New Jersey to observe and promote the week with appropriate activities and programs.

     3.    This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.

STATEMENT

This joint resolution would designate the first full week of May in each year as "National Travel and Tourism Week" in New Jersey, and urge the people to observe and promote the week with appropriate activities and programs.

"National Travel and Tourism Week" was first established when the United States Congress passed a joint resolution in 1983 designating the week to be celebrated in May, and President Ronald Reagan signed a Presidential Proclamation urging citizens to observe the week with "the appropriate ceremonies and activities."

New Jersey has a rich and storied history and is home to a host of diverse artistic, cultural, and historic institutions, including performing arts groups and centers and museums; entertainment venues, including racetracks and casinos; beloved natural destinations, including State and national parks and beautiful beaches; a range of recreational activities and offerings, including professional, collegiate, and amateur sports; and agricultural tourism offerings, such as farm-based festivals and winery tours.  The tourism industry represents a vital component of New Jersey's overall economy, functioning as the third-largest source of private-sector employment in the State and providing billions of dollars in economic activity and revenue in the form of taxes.  Given the fact that tourism is a vital component of the State's economy, an essential contributor to the livelihood of State residents, and a facilitator of State pride and community, it is reasonable and appropriate for the State and its residents to celebrate "National Travel and Tourism Week."
