     Creates "Dairy Animal of the Year" award.

An Act creating a "Dairy Animal of the Year" award and supplementing Title 4 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    a. Each year the Department of Agriculture shall select a dairy animal for the "Dairy Animal of the Year" award. The department shall:

     (1)   create a competitive process among farms in order to select a dairy animal each year to receive the "Dairy Animal of the Year" award;

     (2)   allow the farmer of the dairy animal to be the dairy spokesperson of the year and use the dairy animal in promotional material for the farm; and

     (3)   create an educational section on the department's website which:

     (a)   features the dairy animal of the year and includes background information about the dairy animal, which shall include, but need not be limited to, the name of the animal and the animal's age, gender, and weight; and

     (b)   discusses the benefits of consuming dairy and dairy products, which may also include an interactive component such as multiple choice questions.

     b.    The department may collaborate with for-profit and non-profit entities to update the department's website for the purposes set forth in this act.

 

     2.    Any person may donate to the department, funds, supplies, or services for use in the development of an educational section on the department's website, and the department is authorized to accept such donations.

 

     3.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill creates a Dairy Animal of the Year" award. Under this bill, the Department of Agriculture is required to select a dairy animal for the "Dairy Animal of the Year" award. The department is required to:

     (1)   create a competitive process among farms in order to select a dairy animal each year to receive the "Dairy Animal of the Year" award;

     (2)   allow the farmer of the dairy animal to be the dairy spokesperson of the year and use the dairy animal in promotional material for the farm; and

     (3)   create an educational section on the department's website which features the dairy animal of the year and includes background information about the dairy animal, which should include the name of the animal and the animal's age, gender, and weight. In addition, the website is required to discuss the benefits of consuming dairy and dairy products, and it may also include an interactive component such as multiple choice questions.

In addition, the department is authorized to accept donations for the development of an educational section on the department's website which discusses the benefits of consuming dairy and dairy products.
