STATEMENT

This bill would require the Department of State, within 60 days after the date of enactment of this bill into law, to post and maintain on its website a list of the specific days, weeks, or months designated by State law for special commemorations each year, consistent with its mission to advance the cultural and historical heritage of the State and encourage the civic engagement of State residents.

The Legislature and the Governor have permanently designated by law specific days, weeks, and months of every year for special commemoration by New Jersey residents.  These special commemorations, ranging, for example, from Black History Month, to Cancer Awareness Week to Vietnam Veterans' Remembrance Day, give State residents the opportunity to pause on the designated day, week, or month to reflect on the subject of special commemoration and engage in appropriate activities at schools, workplaces, and communities.

Currently, the State does not provide information on the designated commemorative dates to the public in a central place, and too often members of the public are not aware of the specific days, weeks, or months that have been so designated for these important events and causes.  As part of implementing the State's goal of regularly commemorating in New Jersey these designated events and causes, a list of the specific days, weeks, or months in which special commemorations are observed in the State should be provided to New Jersey residents on an official State website.
