SYNOPSIS
Directs Department of Law and Public Safety to engage in Internet privacy and social media responsibility campaign.

An Act directing the Department of Law and Public Safety to engage in an Internet privacy and social media responsibility campaign.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. This act shall be known and may be cited as the "Internet Privacy and Social Media Responsibility Act."
2. As used in P.L. , c. (C. ) (pending before the Legislature as this bill):
"Department" means the Department of Law and Public Safety;
"Website" means the website maintained and operated by the department pursuant to section 4 of P.L. , c. (C. ) (pending before the Legislature as this bill).
3. The Department of Law and Public Safety shall engage in an online campaign to inform young people about the importance of maintaining one's privacy while using the Internet, how to use social media platforms responsibly, and how to utilize the privacy settings on websites and social media platforms. The department shall disseminate this information primarily via the Internet and through social media platforms.
4. The department shall:
a. maintain and operate a website which shall provide information to the public about: (1) how to protect one's privacy on the Internet, (2) how to use social media responsibly and protect one's privacy while using social media, (3) the potential negative consequences of failing to protect one's privacy on the Internet or to use social media responsibly, (4) accounts in the news media related to those negative consequences, and (5) any other topic or issue related to the Internet privacy and social media responsibility campaign.
b. produce or cause to be produced instructional videos on how to use the privacy settings on popular websites and social media platforms and post those videos on the website.
c. maintain an active presence on popular social media platforms and utilize those platforms to disseminate information relating to the Internet privacy and social media responsibility campaign and to encourage young people to access the information on the website.
5. The department may partner with student organizations, State academic institutions, and local and State agencies to assist in generating content for the website or to develop and promote training programs and seminars designed to support the Internet privacy and social media responsibility campaign.
6. The department may develop an internship program to assist in creating content for the website, disseminating information through the website, or in any other manner that is relevant to the Internet privacy and social media responsibility campaign.
7. The department may request the assistance and services of employees of any other State department, board, bureau, commission, task force or agency as it may require and as may be reasonably made available to it.
8. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill directs the Department of Law and Public Safety to engage in an Internet privacy and social media responsibility campaign.
The Department of Law and Public Safety is directed to engage in an online campaign to inform young people about the importance of maintaining one's privacy while using the Internet, how to use social media platforms responsibly, and how to utilize the privacy settings on websites and social media platforms.
The department is directed to maintain and operate a website which shall provide information to the public about how to protect one's privacy on the Internet, how to use social media responsibly and protect one's privacy while using social media, and the potential negative consequences of failing to protect one's privacy on the Internet or to use social media responsibly. The department is directed to also produce or cause to be produced instructional videos on how to use the privacy settings on popular websites and social media platforms and post those videos on the website. Finally, the department is directed to maintain an active presence on popular social media platforms and utilize those platforms to disseminate information relating to the Internet privacy and social media responsibility campaign and to encourage young people to access the information on the website.
The bill also authorizes the department to partner with student organizations, State academic institutions, and local and State agencies and develop an internship program.
