Expands calibers of rim-fire rifles permitted on State wildlife management target ranges.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Act concerning target practice in State wildlife management areas, and supplementing Title 23 of the Revised Statutes.

Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  Target practice shall not be permitted on State wildlife area lands except in those areas and ranges specifically designated by the Division of Fish and Wildlife.  Shotguns, muzzleloaders, and rim-fire rifles of a caliber not exceeding .22 caliber may be discharged and bow and arrows may be shot or cast in those areas and ranges for target practice as part of any approved hunter education program or for any other purpose authorized by the division.

The division shall adopt guidelines and regulations to effectuate the purposes of this section.

     2.  This act shall take effect on the first day of the third month following enactment.

STATEMENT

This bill clarifies the types of weapons that may be used at designated target areas and ranges in State wildlife management areas.

By regulation, the Division of Fish and Wildlife currently permits shotguns, muzzleloaders, bows and arrows, and .22 caliber rim-fire rifles to be used at its designated target sites.  This bill would expand those weapons to include rim-fire rifles of a caliber of less than .22 caliber.

This change would permit the use of .17 caliber rim-fire rifles.
