Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    A governing body or local government agency shall not authorize a local government officer serving on a governing body or the board of a local government agency to use a motor vehicle owned by the local government agency for any unofficial purposes, including transportation to a local government officer's residence.

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

STATEMENT

This bill prohibits an elected official of a municipality and local utility or authority commissioners from using a vehicle owned by the municipality, utility, or authority for unofficial purpose, including driving that vehicle to the official's primary place of residence after the close of business.  Current law does not establish any restriction on the use of municipally owned vehicles.
