A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT to modify the school calendar law to allow local boards of education to extend the closing date for students by three days until June 13 to provide for makeup days due to inclement weather or emergency conditions and if additional makeup days are still needed, to use up to two protected teacher workdays.
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. G.S. 115C‑84.2 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:
"(f) Notwithstanding subsection (d) of this section, if the school calendar does not include sufficient weekdays to accommodate makeup days due to school closings for inclement weather or emergency conditions, a local board of education may extend the closing date for students by up to three additional days to June 13. If additional days are still needed for makeup days due to school closings for inclement weather or emergency conditions, a local board of education may use up to two protected teacher workdays under subdivision (4) of subsection (a) of this section."
SECTION 2. G.S. 115C‑84.2(a)(4) reads as rewritten:
"(a) School Calendar. – Each local board of education shall adopt a school calendar consisting of 215 days all of which shall fall within the fiscal year. A school calendar shall include the following:
...
(4) Five days, as designated by the local board, for
use as teacher workdays. These days shall be protected to allow teachers to
complete instructional and classroom administrative duties. The local school
administrative unit shall not impose any additional tasks on these days. The
local board shall schedule one of these days at the beginning of the school
year and one at the end of each academic quarter.quarter. Up to two
of these days may be used for makeup days due to school closings for inclement
weather or emergency conditions as provided in subsection (f) of this section."
SECTION 3. This act is effective when it becomes law and applies beginning with the 2009‑2010 school year.
