A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT to require the state board of education to establish standards for a computer science coding elective course for high school and middle school students.
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. G.S. 115C‑81 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:
"(m) Computer Science Coding Elective Course. – The State Board of Education shall develop computer science curriculum content standards, including curriculum standards to teach coding, for use by local boards of education to offer as elective courses for middle school and high school students. For the purposes of this subsection, "coding" is the process of converting a program design into an accurate and detailed representation of that program in a suitable language."
SECTION 2. This act is effective when it becomes law and applies beginning with the 2015‑2016 school year.
