Senate Resolution 31

(As Adopted by Senate)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2022 LOYD STAR HIGH SCHOOL "HORNETS" BOYS GOLF TEAM AND COACHES LYDIA KING AND CHRIS KING FOR WINNING BACK-TO-BACK MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION (MHSAA) CLASS 1 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

WHEREAS, the field of the MHSAA Class 1 Boys State Golf Championship on May 7-8, 2022, was basically the defending champs from Loyd Star High School and a large contingent of teams from the northeast part of the state.  The visitors from places like Myrtle and Smithville and Hickory Flat played an 18-hole course at the Clubs at Ole Brook and experienced the best hospitality that Lincoln County has to offer; and

WHEREAS, the friendliness only went so far, as the Loyd Star "Hornets" Golf Team efficiently took care of business on their home course to capture the Class 1 State Title for a second straight year; and

WHEREAS, Loyd Star Golf Coaches Lydia and Chris King saw their team finish with a team score of 612 strokes, which far outpaced Belmont High in second place with 633 strokes; and

WHEREAS, Senior Dawson Hester finished third overall in the individual scoring.  Hester shot a 69 and 71 to lead his team.  "Really proud of Dawson in how he went out and played great golf while being paired with a very impressive player in Wilson," said Coach Chris King.  "Dawson has power off the tee, but I think his short game is what sets him apart.  He really has a feel for chipping and playing around the green."  Hester has signed to continue his golf career next season as a member of the team at Meridian Community College.  Hester also finished third overall last year when Loyd Star won the State Championship by posting a two-day total of 674 on Wolf Hollow Golf Course in Wesson.  Wilson wasn't at that event, as he was playing at a national amateur event on the same date; and

WHEREAS, scoring is set up so that each team can put six players on the course per round each day and the lowest four scores from that round are combined toward the team total.  Loyd Star used the 69 by Hester, a 77 by eighth-grader Brody Thibodeaux, a 79 by junior Casen DeHart and an 83 by sophomore Caden White.  The four scores used for Loyd Star's total on day two were Hester's 71, Thibodeaux's 76, DeHart's 78, and a 79 by Riley Case.  Case, an eighth-grader, shaved seven strokes off his score from the day before.  Senior Riley Easterling also shot an 85 and an 81 for the Hornets; and

WHEREAS, Loyd Star made a bid last year to host the tournament and found out in November that they had won.  Chris King gives credit to his wife and Co-Coach Lydia for mastering the administrative side of their jobs.  The visiting coaches all were complimentary of not just the course, but Brookhaven as a whole according to Coach King.  The downtown business district was especially impressive to the parents and supporters who had come, some from as far as five hours away, to watch their teams in the tournament.  "KDMC and David Culpepper were there to help us with whatever we needed like always," said Coach Chris King.  "Our Loyd Star Principal Mrs. Dena Ford, Athletic Director Mr. Bryan Ford and Superintendent Mr. David Martin all made sure we had whatever we needed to make the tournament a success"; and

WHEREAS, members of the Loyd Star Golf Team winning the title for a second straight year are:  Coach Lydia King, Caden White, Riley Case, Dawson Hester, Riley Easterling, Casen DeHart, Brody Thibodeaux and Coach Chris King; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 2022 Loyd Star High School "Hornets" Boys Golf Team and Coaches Lydia King and Chris King for winning back-to-back Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 1 State Championships, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coaches Lydia and Chris King for the team, forwarded to Loyd Star Principal Dena Ford, Athletic Director Bryan Ford and Superintendent David Martin, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
