A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WISHING THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI A "HAPPY 200TH BIRTHDAY" FROM THE MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE.
WHEREAS, on December 10, 1817, Mississippi was officially recognized as the 20th state in the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, in 2017 the state will have the unique opportunity to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Mississippi's statehood with a reflection on Mississippi's history and culture. Through regional bicentennial celebrations and coordinated local events, Mississippi will spend 2017 honoring people and places, music and food, achievements in agriculture, science and industry, sports legends, literary and artistic genius, and more; and
WHEREAS, the state has produced more important writers than any other state, and more than many countries of the world, including William Faulkner, Eudora Welty and Richard Wright; and
WHEREAS, we have produced the King of Rock and Roll Music in Elvis Presley, the King of the Blues in B.B. King, the Father of Country Music in Jimmie Rodgers and the first African-American woman to sing at the Metropolitan Opera, Leontyne Price; and
WHEREAS, we have produced Jerry Clower of Amite County, considered the leading country comedian to ever work a stage; and
WHEREAS, one of our longtime elected officials, the late U.S. Senator John C. Stennis, is regarded as one of the most honest and upright political leaders in the nation's history. A U.S. Navy aircraft carrier bearing his name stands sentinel today on the high seas protecting our country; and
WHEREAS, Mississippi has fought hurricanes and tornadoes by the dozens and somehow survived because our people are tough and caring. Our land is enriched by black oil, white gold and green majesty. Some say we have the best deer herd in America; and
WHEREAS, we know how to grow and fry chicken better than people in any other state; and
WHEREAS, our women are unquestionably the prettiest and most gracious anywhere; and
WHEREAS, Mississippi is the home of the Grammy Museum Mississippi, known as the Birthplace of America's Music; and
WHEREAS, Mississippi has the largest number of black-elected officials in America; and
WHEREAS, Mississippians believe in God. We have more churches per-capita than anywhere else and our people are the most generous in this country; and
WHEREAS, this state has produced the best running back in Walter Payton, the best quarterback in Brett Favre and the best pass-catcher in Jerry Rice in the annals of football. The most celebrated family in sports are the Mannings: Archie, Eli and Peyton; and
WHEREAS, we are who we are. "Happy Birthday, Mississippi!":
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That the Mississippi Legislature wishes the State of Mississippi a "Happy 200th Birthday."
