Senate Concurrent Resolution 662

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP AND PUBLIC SERVICE OF MAYOR JIMMY CLYDE OF MAGEE, MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, we pay tribute to a most public-spirited citizen of Mississippi.  Mayor Jimmy Clyde is currently completing his fifth term as Mayor of Magee, Mississippi, where he has been a respected leader of his community; and

     WHEREAS, Mayor Jimmy Clyde is originally from Jackson, Mississippi.  He is a 1968 graduate of Jackson's Provine High School, a 1970 graduate of Hinds Community College and a 1972 graduate of the University of Mississippi.  After graduating from college, Mayor Clyde began work at a large manufacturing corporation in Mendenhall, Mississippi, and later in Gallman, Mississippi, for three years.  He then moved to Magee and became the City Clerk where he served for 22 years and then he decided to run for Mayor after his predecessor retired; and

     WHEREAS, Mayor Clyde is currently on the Board of Directors of the Central Mississippi Planning and Development District where he served as Chairman from 2007-2009.  He is a member of the Central Mississippi Mayors Association where he served as Chairman for one year.  He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Municipal Service Company and the Mississippi Municipal Workers Compensation Group.  He served as Finance Chairman for the League in 2010-2011, and he has completed the Basic, Advanced and Professional Development Certified Municipal Officials Program; and

     WHEREAS, Mayor Clyde has implemented a Youth Council in Magee for several years, and he is Chairman of the Living Well Health Advisory Committee in his city.  The City of Magee was chosen as a Healthy Hometown in 2016 by Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Mayor Clyde was elected to serve as President of the Mississippi Municipal League for 2016-2017; and

     WHEREAS, he is an active member of First Baptist Church, a youth Sunday School Teacher, Church Clerk, Choir Member and a Deacon.  Mayor Clyde is a member of the Simpson County Solid Waste Authority.  He helped organize the YMCA in Magee, is a former Youth Swimming Instructor, Girls Softball Coach and Tee-Ball Umpire, and also reads to first graders on Fridays; and

     WHEREAS, Mayor Clyde and his wife Debbie have been married for 43 years.  They have four daughters:  Kristi, a First-Grade Teacher; Kelli, a First-Grade Teacher; Kim, a Nurse Practitioner at University Medical Center; and Kasey, a Merchandise Buyer for a retail outlet.  The Mayor and his wife have five grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Clyde has announced he will not seek reelection; and it is with great pride that we commend the enormous civic energy of a Mississippi citizen who is a wonderful example for public servants:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the legacy of leadership and public service of Mayor Jimmy Clyde of Magee, Mississippi, and extend the best wishes of the Legislature to the Mayor and his family for future success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Mayor Clyde, forwarded to the Magee Board of Aldermen and the Mississippi Municipal League, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
