By: Senator(s) Carmichael, Barnett, Burton, Jackson (32nd), Norwood, Simmons (12th)

Senate Concurrent Resolution 657

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MERIDIAN HIGH SCHOOL "WILDCATS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND FIRST-YEAR COACH RONALD NORMAN FOR WINNING THEIR THIRD STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN SCHOOL HISTORY.

WHEREAS, for the Meridian High School "Wildcats" Boys Basketball Team, the March 10, 2017, 6A State Championship has been three years in the making.  In the past they were eliminated from the finals too soon.  This year they were finally crowned champions.  This is the first title for Meridian High School since 2011, and before that it was 1979; and

WHEREAS, bringing the program its third title in school history with a 68-59 win against Murrah, this group of seniors won the Gold Ball Trophy for first-year Coach Ronald Norman.  Norman said, "At Meridian we are expected to win at everything.  Over the years we have had some good teams.  In 6A its tough every night.  This has been a three-year process for my seniors.  This year is a culmination of those three wins we wanted"; and

WHEREAS, despite both teams playing each other even in the first half, there was one player in particular who stood out:  Meridian's Jay Malone shot 100 percent from the three-point range, 100% from the free throw line and missed only three field goals.  He knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer of the second quarter, sending his team into halftime with a 29-25 lead.  He finished with 23 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Malone was awarded the Player of the Game Title.  As one of those seniors who has waited three years for this moment, finally accomplishing it was everything he expected it to be; and     WHEREAS, Meridian turned it up in the third quarter, with 12 points in the paint and continued shooting well from outside.  The Wildcats went into the fourth quarter, with an eight-point lead, 48-39, and the Mustangs never came back; and

WHEREAS, the 2016-2017 Meridian High School "Wildcats" Boys Basketball Team Championship Roster is:  Treamond Pittman, PG; Jaylen McDonald, G; David McCoy, G; Tereik Hall, PG; Javius Malone, PG; Miles Miller, PG; Vontrell Pringle, SF, G; Tyron Brewer, SF; Jarvis Cole, F; Trevail Gilmore, SF; Kevin Horne, SF; Tevarrius Adams, G; Ledarrious Brewer, G, F; Jamond Gordon, PF; and Head Coach Ronald Norman; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Meridian High School "Wildcats" Boys Basketball Team and first-year Coach Ronald Norman for winning their third State Championship in school history, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents, and sponsors for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Ronald Norman and Meridian High School Principal Victor Hubbard, forwarded to the Meridian School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
