Senate Concurrent Resolution 651

(As Adopted by Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE NEW ALBANY HIGH SCHOOL "LADY BULLDOGS" BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH JOHN STROUD FOR WINNING THE MHSAA CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR THEIR NO. 1 STATE RANKING.

WHEREAS, Coach John Stroud's New Albany High School "Lady Bulldogs" Basketball team has been the state's top-ranked squad all season long.  New Albany remained perfect this season against Mississippi teams by defeating Lawrence County 71-61 on March 4, 2011, at the Mississippi Coliseum before an estimated crowd of 3,000 to win the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A State Championship; and

WHEREAS, it was the first State Title for the "Lady Bulldogs" since 2002 and helped erase the disappointment of last season when they went undefeated until losing to Raymond in the Championship Game.  "We waited for this game for three years," said Coach Stroud.  "We talked about how these girls have won 87 games and it would be a shame for them not to win the 'Gold Ball' Trophy one time in their career.  It was just a total team effort.  We found a way to win"; and

WHEREAS, Dandy Dozen Sophomore Jazmine Spears, named the game's Most Valuable Player, finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds.  New Albany led 45-40 going into the fourth quarter when Spears scored eight points to help the Lady Bulldogs stretch their lead to 57-44.  "She took over the game," said Coach Stroud.  Senior guard Kebrina Lucas poured in a career-high 25 points, saving it all for the Championship Game.  Coach Stroud, Ole Miss' career-scoring leader, stated that she came through for the team.  "Kebrina made the difference in the game"; and

WHEREAS, after completing their season with the Gold Ball Trophy and going perfect against teams from Mississippi, the New Albany girls finished No. 1 in the Super 10 State Ranking as well.  New Albany finished its season on a 10-game winning streak.  All of New Albany's losses were against out-of-state teams, including a one-point loss to Bob Jones, the 6A State Champion in Alabama.  "Being No. 1 all season, it definitely put a target on our back," said Stroud.  New Albany has lost just one game to a team from Mississippi in the last two years; and

WHEREAS, the "Lady Bulldogs" Championship Roster is as follows:  Seniors:  Jasmine Knox, Kebrina Lucas, Paris Sanders, Nyambi Penson, Caroline Stroud, Micha Washington, Porche White, and Marquita Young; Junior:  Alisha Smith; Sophomore:  Jazmine Spears; Freshmen:  Erin Michael Carter, Lauren Cavender, Christina Jeffries, Darby Mills, Allie Owen, and Ali Sizemore; Eighth Grade:  Rometta Lombard; Head Coach John Stroud; Assistant Coach Alicia Pickens; Managers:  Paige Green and Cortney Smith; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this special achievement by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the New Albany High School "Lady Bulldogs" Basketball Team and Head Coach John Stroud for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A State Championship and for their No. 1 State Ranking, and we extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future academic and athletic success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach John Stroud and New Albany Principal for the team, forwarded to the Union County Board of Education and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
