A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE LAUREL HIGH SCHOOL "GOLDEN TORNADOES" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH MARCUS PRICE FOR CAPTURING THE MHSAA CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, with solid shooting, steady ball movement and stingy defense, the Laurel High School "Golden Tornadoes" Basketball Team defeated Wayne County 71-47 on March 11, 2016, at the Mississippi Coliseum to capture the Class 5A Boys Basketball State Championship; and
WHEREAS, "It was just a great team victory," Laurel Head Coach Marcus Price said. "We were a team of destiny"; and
WHEREAS, Laurel (27-5) pulled away with an impressive third quarter. The Golden Tornadoes outscored Wayne County 25-4 in the period to take a 56-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Dontario Drummond, who scored seven points during the game-changing run, supplied the exclamation point with a long 3-pointer from the right wing that he hit while falling down to beat the buzzer. From there, the Golden Tornadoes maintained a double-figure lead to close it out. Drummond scored a game-high 23 points with five rebounds, five steals and two assists; and
WHEREAS, the 2016 Laurel High School "Golden Tornadoes" Boys Basketball Team Roster is: Charles Winston, Jahmauri Campbell, Thakarius Keyes, Je'vah Jones, Dontario Drummond, Andre George, Keshun Arrington, Bryce Woolverton, Skylar Holden, Cameron Jones, Mathew Tillman, Steven Caston, Milijah Windham, Troymain Crosby, Omar Steele, Devon Benson, Deanthony Page, Demichael Brown, Octavious Cooley and Keon Howard; Head Coach Marcus Price; and Assistant Coaches Randy Pettis, Kendrick Purvis, Kendrick McDonald, Tracey Lampley and Rashidi McCormick; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a championship season by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Laurel High School "Golden Tornadoes" Boys Basketball Team and Coach Marcus Price for capturing the MHSAA Class 5A State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Price for the team, Laurel High School Principal Richard Evans, forwarded to the Laurel School District Board of Trustees, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
