A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE WEST JONES HIGH SCHOOL "LADY MUSTANGS" SOCCER TEAM AND HEAD COACH CHIP GIEGER FOR WINNING THE MHSAA CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the West Jones High School Lady Mustangs Soccer Team traveled to Clinton High School on February 5, 2011, to face off against the Ridgeland Lady Titans for the Mississippi High School Athletic Association Soccer 5A State Championship.  Redemption was the word of the day for the Lady Mustangs as they were looking to bounce back from last year's 1-0 loss to Ridgeland in the title game.  West Jones got exactly what it was looking for in a 3-2 victory; and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Titans took a 2-1 lead after senior midfielder Sloan Bancroft scored on a penalty kick in the 59th minute.  Macie Wallace scored her second equalizing goal in the 77th minute with an assist from junior center midfielder Sara Coleman again to tie the game 2-2 and send it into overtime.  The Lady Mustangs took their first lead of the match in the second overtime period when tiny eighth-grader left midfielder Carly Mauldin scored in the 92nd minute with an assist from Sara Coleman whose free kick rebounded off the goal post allowing Mauldin to score.  "This was a tremendous and exciting game," said Lady Mustangs Assistant Coach Tony Buckley.  It's always a sweet thing when you win.  "This is an amazing feeling to come out victorious in my last game in our senior year," said Wallace; and

     WHEREAS, West Jones finished the season with a 17-0-5 record, and was undefeated in its Division.  Playoff Games:  1st round-Played Stone County High School and won 6-0; 2nd round-Played Long Beach High School and won 1-0; 3rd round, South State-Played Gautier High School and won 2-1; State Championship-Played Ridgeland High School and won 3-2; and

     WHEREAS, this was something that we had been working for all year," said Lady Mustangs Head Coach Chip Gieger.  "Ridgeland came out and played us really hard, and for us to come back the way we did was just awesome."  "This game was all about last year and this year was for our seniors," added Buckley.  "I am so proud and happy for them because their story has a happy ending"; and

     WHEREAS, the 2010-2011 Lady Mustangs Soccer Team Roster:  Abby Baravik, Kelsey Quarles, Jordan Holifield, Annalee Ellis, Somer Anderson, Lakyn Bice, Abbey Graham, Cole Campbell, Miracle Musgrove, Macie Wallace, Mia Bridges, Payton Roney, Beth Coleman, Sara Coleman, Lenzi Roney, Marissa Hathorne, Jamie Grice, Hunter Eady, Taylor Herring, Carly Mauldin, Leslie Howard; Head Coach Chip Gieger; Assistant Coach Tony Buckley; Manager Laken Maskew and Statistician Denis Bohannon; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this achievement by a team of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the West Jones High School "Lady Mustangs" Soccer Team and Head Coach Chip Gieger for winning the Mississippi High School Athletic Association Class 5A State Championship and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future athletic and academic success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Gieger, forwarded to West Jones Principal Lynn Lyon and the Jones County Board of Education and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
