Senate Concurrent Resolution 629

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING OLIVE BRANCH HIGH SCHOOL "LADY QUISTOR" STAR GIRLS BASKETBALL JUNIOR GUARD MYAH TAYLOR AS 2016 "GATORADE MISSISSIPPI PLAYER OF THE YEAR."

WHEREAS, on March 10, 2016, Olive Branch High School "Lady Quistor" Star Girls Basketball Player Myah Taylor was announced as the 2016 Gatorade "Mississippi Player of the Year" recognizing the state's top girls' basketball talent; and

WHEREAS, it is the second straight year for Myah to win the award and as a junior, the stellar Lady Quistor point guard may win it three straight years as a senior, if the past two years are any indication; and

WHEREAS, "It's a huge accomplishment and I've been working very hard for it, but I was surprised," Myah said.  "If we had won the State Championship, it would have made it an even better year"; and

WHEREAS, individual honors seem to keep finding Myah Taylor.  "It's no surprise to me, because she's done the work," Coach Blake Jones said.  "I know how hard she works.  Of the other players in the state, I know who's good and I've scouted other teams with players who are Division I-worthy.  As far as an all-around player, it didn't surprise me at all"; and

WHEREAS, Coach Blake Jones said this season Taylor became an even better player than when she first won the Gatorade Award as a sophomore last year.  "Her scoring average last year was 17-18 points a game and that rose by 10 points a game this year.  That's a dramatic improvement on her part.  Her shooting percentage could go up next year but she improved her points per game.  Her assists and her steals improved and you want to look for that every year"; and

WHEREAS, this year Myah Taylor averaged 26 points per game and picked up seven steals and four rebounds a contest for the Lady Quistors.  She was ranked among the Top 50 Junior Girls Basketball Players in the nation, according to ESPN Hoop Gurlz, and has won other state honors in addition to the Gatorade Award; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we commend an outstanding student athlete who has brought honor to her school, her community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize Olive Branch High School "Lady Quistor" Star Girls Basketball Junior Guard Myah Taylor as 2016 Gatorade Mississippi Player of the Year, and extend to Myah, her family, her coaches and teammates our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Myah Taylor, forwarded to Coach Blake Jones, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
