Senate Concurrent Resolution 614

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE FLORENCE HIGH SCHOOL "EAGLES" BOYS SOCCER TEAM AND HEAD COACH GRAY MASSEY FOR WINNING THE MHSAA CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Eagles of Florence were flying high February 5, 2011, at Clinton by defeating the Amory Panthers 3-0 to capture the State 4A Soccer Title; and

     WHEREAS, the Eagles are coached by Gray Massey who won his first State Championship Title as a coach.  Massey has coached the Eagles Soccer Team for six years.  Massey contributed the victory to his seniors who he said showed the type of leadership a winning team has to have; and

     WHEREAS, Florence Eagles jumped off to a 2-0 lead in the first half of action against the Panthers.  The Eagles played an aggressive game and continued the pressure.  The first goal came from an assist by senior Andrew Baggett, to senior Ryne Riebock.  Baggett assisted Brandon King with a goal, and at the end of the first half of play, Florence led 2-0.  During halftime, Coach Massey said he told the players, "Congratulations, you are the first half State Champions."  Early in the second half, Baggett assisted Brett Harris in his goal, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead which they held on to for the win and State Title; and

     WHEREAS, this was the third State Soccer Title for the Eagles.  Coach Massey told the players they had worked hard all season and earned the title they deserved; and

     WHEREAS, the 2010 Florence Eagles roster is as follows:  Seniors are Bryor Shorter, Allen Marino, Andrew Baggett, Nick Rushing, Cole Mitchell, Brett Harris, Nick Williams, Ryne Riebock, DeShawn Kitchens, and Drew Norman; Juniors are Zack Traylor, Will Godfrey, Brandon King, Sam Vincent, and Jason West; Sophomores are Matthew Owen, Dustin Brown, and Austin Frith; Freshmen are Luke Sims, Durham Norman, Evan McKinley, Chaz Breaux, Corey Warren, Bo Gray, Jamie Hicks, and Jake Holland; also seventh-grader Windham Whatley; Head Coach Gray Massey, Assistant Coach Josh Cavanaugh, and Athletic Director Brad Cliburn; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this well-deserved achievement by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Florence High School "Eagles" Boys Soccer Team and Head Coach Gray Massey for winning the Mississippi High School Athletic Association Class 4A State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors on this occasion.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Massey, forwarded to Principal Tony Martin and the Rankin County Board of Education and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
