Senate Concurrent Resolution 613

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND SALUTING TISHOMINGO COUNTY'S OWN MAC MCANALLY ON THE OCCASION OF THE DEDICATION OF THE MISSISSIPPI COUNTRY MUSIC TRAIL MARKER IN HIS HONOR.

WHEREAS, Tishomingo County's own Mac McAnally will be honored on February 25, 2011, at C.C. Shook Park in Belmont, Mississippi.  McAnally will attend the unveiling of a marker commemorating his important contribution to country music.  The marker was funded by the Tishomingo County Tourism Council and will be erected by the City of Belmont; and

WHEREAS, Mac McAnally was born July 15, 1957, in Red Bay, Alabama.  He began playing piano and singing at the Belmont First Baptist Church in Belmont as a child, and by age 15, he had composed his first song.  From there, he went on to become a session musician in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.  During a session break, McAnally began to perform original material.  The producers there encouraged him, and by 1977 he was signed to Ariola Records.  His self-titled debut album produced the singles "It's a Crazy World" and "Minimum Love," which respectively reached #37 and #41 on the Billboard Hot 100.  He found success as a songwriter for Jimmy Buffett, in addition to co-writing Alabama's Number One hit "Old Flame."  He and Walt Aldridge co-wrote Ricky Van Shelton's 1987 single "Crime of Passion"; and

WHEREAS, in his career, Mac has recorded ten studio albums and eight singles.  Two of his singles were hits on the Billboard Hot 100, and six more on the Hot Country Songs charts.  His ninth chart entry came in late 2008-early 2009 as a guest vocalist on Kenny Chesney's Number One cover of his 1990 single "Down the Road."  He has also produced for Sawyer Brown and Restless Heart, written several singles for other artists, and is a member of Jimmy Buffett's backing band, The Coral Reefer Band; and

WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi and the Mississippi Development Authority/Tourism Division are celebrating the state's rich and unparalleled music heritage with the Mississippi Country Music Trail.  The Mississippi Country Music Trail will initially consist of 30 markers that will span the entire state.  The list of sites will commemorate Grammy winning Country Music legends, singer/songwriters, producers, historic sites and the Mississippi events that shaped the culture of Country Music.  The Country Music Trail is patterned after the Mississippi Blues Trail; and

WHEREAS, the purpose of the Mississippi Country Music Trail is threefold:  (1) to recognize the important contributions made by Mississippi artists as well as our places that influenced Country Music; (2) to encourage pride and promote heritage education in local communities; and (3) to increase tourism; and

WHEREAS, Mac McAnally's awards and nominations are:  2009, Country Music Association Awards; 2010, 52nd Grammy Awards; and 2010, Best Country Collaboration with Vocals, "Down the Road"; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we acknowledge the important contributions made by this respected Mississippi artist, who has brought honor to the Mississippi musical profession, his community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and salute Tishomingo County's own Mac McAnally on the occasion of the dedication of the Mississippi Country Music Trail Marker in his honor on February 25, 2011, commend his important contribution to Mississippi music, and extend our best wishes to him and his family on this auspicious occasion.
