Senate Concurrent Resolution 609

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMENDING THE MILITARY AND PUBLIC SERVICE OF WALTHALL COUNTY SUPERVISOR TRAVIS ALFORD, MISSISSIPPI'S LONGEST SERVING SUPERVISOR.

     WHEREAS, Mr. Travis Alford, 83, of Salem, Walthall County, Mississippi, died February 10, 2011, from injuries sustained in an accident; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Alford was District 4 Walthall County Supervisor and had served his county as Supervisor for 44 years since 1968, and at the time of his death was Mississippi's longest serving Supervisor; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Alford was a vital member of the Mississippi Association of Supervisors (MAS) from the time he took office, serving on the MAS Executive Committee since 1978 and as MAS President in 1993.  Mr. Alford was currently serving as the Chairman of the Executive Committee; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Alford was born on May 7, 1927, in Walthall County, Mississippi, to the late Arthur and Margaret Martin Alford.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Louise McKenzie Alford; son, Homer Alford; and brother, Thomas Alford.  For more years than can be remembered, the Alfords welcomed loved ones to their dinner table for home-cooked Sunday dinners; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Alford was looking forward to campaigning for the next term.  In addition to his leadership in the Mississippi Association of Supervisors, he was a Director and charter member of Mississippi Public Entity Workers Compensation Trust and Walthall County board member of Southwest Mississippi Planning and Development District; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Alford was proud of being an American by serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  He was also a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of Varnell Masonic Lodge.  Mr. Alford was currently Chairman of Deacons at Salem Baptist Church and was active in all areas of church life.  Walking a long mile to church and back every Sunday and Wednesday symbolized his zest for living to those who knew him.  Even in his busy life, he took great pleasure in attending many Salem School ballgames and especially looked forward to cheering for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, he is survived by his wife, Helen Craft Alford of Tylertown; son, Troy (Kathy Mord) Alford of McComb; daughters, Linda Ingram of Hattiesburg and Sue Alford of Tylertown; daughter-in-law, Joan Alford of Tylertown; brothers, Hulon Alford and Dan (Joan) Alford of Tylertown; sisters, Mary Thornhill and Martha Ann (Joe) Ladner of Tylertown; brother-in-law, Cartee (Nancy) McKenzie of Hattiesburg; grandchildren, Christina (Larry Joe) Rayborn, Molly (Lathyrl) Lucas, Anna A. (Bill) Nelson, April (Nick) Smith, Heath Alford, Jessica Alford, Jamie Alford and Savannah Alford; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins; and

     WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of a vital public official who was a leading citizen of his community and of the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commend the military and public service of Walthall County Supervisor Travis Alford, Mississippi's longest serving Supervisor, who died in an accident on February 10, 2011, and extend our sympathy to his surviving family on his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Mr. Alford, forwarded to the Walthall County Board of Supervisors, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
