A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE SOUTHEAST LAUDERDALE HIGH SCHOOL "LADY TIGERS" BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH JOE MILLER FOR WINNING THE MHSAA CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR THEIR EXCELLENT 2012-2013 SEASON.
WHEREAS, heading into the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Title Game, Southeast Lauderdale High School Coach Joe Miller said his team was knocking on the door of becoming one of the best in school history. Coach Miller still isn't sure where this team ranks, but knows the team is among the best after the way it played. The Southeast Lauderdale Lady Tigers held off a late charge from Charleston to win 63-59 in the Class 3A Girls State Championship at the Mississippi Coliseum; and
WHEREAS, it is Southeast Lauderdale's fifth State Title, but first since 2008. The Lady Tigers have made it to Jackson 9 of the last 10 years; and
WHEREAS, "My seniors are physically, emotionally and mentally tough," Coach Miller said. "That pays off in this kind of game. You lose the lead, you're not playing well and you are making a lot of turnovers. Then to get your composure back and step up and win the ballgame was just huge"; and
WHEREAS, Southeast Lauderdale (33-2), ranked No. 4 in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10, built up a 54-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Charleston slowly picked away at the lead. That is when Southeast Lauderdale Senior Jasmine Bush took over. Bush put the team ahead by 2 with a rebound and layup with 1:14 remaining. Bush, who was named the game's MVP, finished with 23 points and 9 rebounds; and
WHEREAS, the 2012-2013 Southeast Lauderdale High School "Lady Tigers" Roster is: Anitra Ruffin, G; Denisha Knight, G; Shakira Shoemaker, G; Timara Trussell, G; Chariae Harbin, G; Kamesha Pringle, G; Sabrazla Wallace, G; Jasmine Bush, P; Tia Larkin, P; Gabrielle Cole, P; Crystal Clay, P; and Head Coach Joe Miller; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Southeast Lauderdale High School "Lady Tigers" Basketball Team and Head Coach Joe Miller for winning the MHSAA Class 3A State Championship and for their excellent 2012-2013 season, and extend to the players, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future successes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Miller and Principal Dwayne Taylor for the team, forwarded to the Lauderdale County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
