A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE THE MADISON SHANNON PALMER HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADING SQUAD MEMBERS AND COACHES FOR WINNING THEIR SECOND CONSECUTIVE COED STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, on December 19, 2009, the Madison Shannon Palmer High School Cheerleading Squad, under the direction of Coach Yolanda Thomas, Assistant Coach Santana Lee, and Dance Choreogrpaher Tiffany Rudd, won the 2009 Mississippi High School Athletic Association Class AAA/AAAA COED Division State Championship and MHSAA State Spirit Award.  This is the only sport at Madison Shannon Palmer High School to have earned a State Title and the first African-American Squad in the State of Mississippi, as well as the Mississippi Delta, to win a State Championship in cheerleading; and

     WHEREAS, the cheerleading season starts immediately after tryouts are held in mid-March for the Madison Shannon Palmer High School Cheerleading Squad; the first month of summer break is spent on conditioning.  The second month of summer participants attend a resident Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) camp.  This year, the squad attended camp at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, though competition is very important to this squad, the first and most important job is to support the athletic teams at Madison Shannon Palmer High School.  The squad of nine girls and six boys cheer at all football and all home basketball games of the Madison Shannon Palmer Dragons; and

     WHEREAS, competition practices for the cheerleader squad run simultaneously through the entire football and basketball seasons.  The squad typically practices 6-8 hours per week on competition routine only.  Each member is responsible for maintaining high academic standards, supporting athletic teams and practicing for competition, all at the same time; and

     WHEREAS, the 2009-2010 Madison Shannon Palmer High School Cheerleading Squad earned the following honors:  UCA Camp, University of Mississippi (July 2009), 1st Place Coed Cheer, 1st Place Coed Dance; MHSAA North Regional, Booneville, Mississippi (October 2009), 2nd place in the 3A/4A COED Division; bid to attend the 2010 UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Florida, February 12-16, 2010.  The squad members are:  Seniors Kristin Myles, Zikera Brown (Captain), Maurice Wilson Mario Key; Juniors John Henry Cotton, Jr., Faquanta Jones, Tekeiria Buckley, Cathy Humphrey, Aulisha Thompson; Sophomores D'Shannon Stewart, Lee Williams, and Freshmen Donyell Hollins, Sha'Kyiah Saddler, Jasmine Pryor and Dezimond Green; Yolanda Thomas, Coach/Choreographer; Santana Lee, Assistant Coach; and Tiffy Rudd, Dance Choreographer; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this unique accomplishment by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Madison Shannon Palmer High School Cheerleading Squad members and their coaches for winning their second consecutive COED State Cheerleading Championship and extend to these members and their parents the best wishes of the Legislature for their future success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the Madison Shannon Palmer High School Cheerleading Squad, Coach Yolanda Thomas and Principal Edgar Holman, Jr., and be made available to the Quitman County Board of Education and the Capitol Press Corps.
