A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION EXTENDING THE RECOGNITION OF THE MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE TO JAIMOE JOHNIE JOHNSON AS RECIPIENT OF THE 2017 GOVERNOR'S ARTS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN MUSIC.

WHEREAS, the Governor's Arts Awards Program has announced its 2017 recipients, which includes Jaimoe Johnie Johnson for Excellence in Music; and

WHEREAS, Jaimoe is one of those special performers whose fans know them by just their first name.  Like Elvis and Oprah, Jaimoe is from the Magnolia State.  He was born Johnny Lee Johnson in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and raised in the coastal Town of Mississippi City near Gulfport.  His drum skills have taken him around the world and his sounds have filled the airwaves and sold millions of records; and

WHEREAS, he excelled at music and athletics during high school, but Jaimoe's love for the drums propelled him onto a career path soon after graduation in 1962.  He toured the country with R&B and Soul Luminaries Joe Tex, Percy Sledge and Otis Redding; and

WHEREAS, in 1969, he became a founding member of the legendary Allman Brothers Band and moved to their home base of Macon, Georgia.  He has remained with the influential Southern rock band for more than 45 years.  With several hit songs, including "Midnight Rider" and "Ramblin' Man," the Allmans are one of the giants of the Classic Rock era; and

WHEREAS, Jaimoe's love of jazz may be his greatest contribution to the group.  He brought the influence of polyrhythmic beats and improvisation into his collaborations with the Allman Brothers Band and became one of the architects of rhythm for the Southern Rock sound.  Jaimoe and the Allmans toured the world and racked up critical success, creating a sound that remains popular today; and

WHEREAS, the Allman Brothers Band has been awarded eleven Gold and five Platinum albums.  They were inducted into the Rock

and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and won a Grammy that same year.  Their live album "At Fillmore East" was inducted into the

Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.  In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the Allman Brothers Band 53 on their list of 100 Greatest of All Time.  In addition to his work with the Allmans, Jaimoe keeps the beat with Les Brers and Jaimoe's Jasssz Band; and

WHEREAS, Jaimoe has close ties to Mississippi and the Gulf Coast.  He returns often to see friends and family in his home state.  He was inducted into the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame in 2014, and in 2015 the Mississippi Blues Trail added a Gulfport Boogie marker to honor Jaimoe's influence on music in the area and around the world; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we pay tribute and express appreciation for the talent of a Mississippi Musician who has made Mississippi a better place and exemplifies the musical and cultural traditions of our great state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby extend the recognition of the Mississippi Legislature to Jaimoe Johnie Johnson as recipient of the 2017 Governor's Arts Award for Excellence in Music, and extend our congratulations to a world-class Mississippi Musician on this auspicious occasion.
