A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE 38TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DELTA BLUES MUSEUM IN CLARKSDALE, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXTENDING THE BEST WISHES OF THE LEGISLATURE.

     WHEREAS, located at the corner of Highway 61 ("The Blues Highway") and Highway 49 in Clarksdale, Mississippi, is "The Crossroads," the location where the legend Blues Musician Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil for the ability to play a mean guitar.  The Crossroads has continued to gain popularity in music like:  "Highway 61", "Crossroads," "Cross Road Blues," and "Highway 49," and in movies "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", and "Crossroads," and in Clarksdale is the Delta Blues Museum; and

     WHEREAS, established in 1979 by the Carnegie Public Library Board of Trustees and reorganized as a stand-alone museum in 1999, the Delta Blues Museum is Mississippi's oldest music museum and the nation's first museum dedicated to the American art form known as the Blues; and

     WHEREAS, a 2013 recipient of the Institute of Museum and Library Services National Medal for Museum and Library Services, the nation's highest honor for museum and library service to the community and a 2014 winner of the National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Award, the Delta Blues Museum is dedicated to creating a welcoming place where visitors find meaning, value and perspective by exploring the history and heritage of the unique American musical art form, the Blues.  The Museum is honored to be a Great River Road Interpretive Center; and

     WHEREAS, the Delta Blues Museum celebrates the Museum's 38th birthday on January 30, 2017, featuring special performances from the Coahoma Community College Choir, Greenville High School Voices of Liberation, Madison Palmer High School Marching Band and the award-winning Delta Blues Museum Band; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we join the Mississippi Blues community in recognizing the musical legacy which is presented in this outstanding museum:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby celebrate the 38th Anniversary of the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and extend the best wishes of the Legislature.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the Executive Director of the Delta Blues Museum, forwarded to the Delta Blues Foundation and the Mississippi Arts Commission, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
