WHEREAS, the Huddleston family was honored on July 19, 2008, by the County Commission of McNairy County, Tennessee, when they proclaimed a day in honor of the entertainer, his late wife Hazel, son, Jimmy, and daughter, Renea. Bud and his late wife are highly respected for their efforts to entertain and promote country/bluegrass music; and
WHEREAS, the middle 1960s brought the famous Country Junction in Ripley. Hazel and Bud were playing with the Rhythm Drifters at this time and the 1970s brought on more radio shows and festivals. Bluegrass became their love and they formed their first bluegrass band in 1981. The band consisted of Bud and Hazel, Shan Tidwell, Gary Swain, Clarence Goodrum and Renae Huddleston. Their schedule was full with fairs, schools, bluegrass festivals, church events and many benefits, both for the individual and the community. They never asked for any money, just played because they loved it; and
WHEREAS, in 1982, Hazel helped Bud with their first bluegrass show on WTXI (FM) in Ripley. With the response being so big from the public, they played on Sundays, too. These bluegrass shows are still being played today, with Bud behind the controls; and
WHEREAS, what became one of the biggest bluegrass festivals in North Mississippi, the Tippah Lake Bluegrass Jam, started in 1984 with Hazel and Bud hosting. The setting was perfect for a great jam, with the lake and hollows all around. Every year the crowd became bigger and bigger, with some drawing around 1,000 people. The Jam will be hosting its 25th year this September; and
WHEREAS, Hazel was also a big part in the Luke Ohler Trail Ride, which was held in her backyard for the past 10 years; and
WHEREAS, Hazel and Bud contributed a lot to the bluegrass field not only by performing music, but also by promoting bluegrass on the radio and in person. Up until three months before her death, Hazel was singing and playing along with her family bluegrass and gospel music. She was an active member of the American Cancer Society and helped in many community projects; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we join the residents of Tippah County in recognizing this family that has contributed to the musical heritage and culture of our region:
