A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND SALUTING REVEREND JOHN CARTER FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS PASTOR OF  MORTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH AND HIS 60 YEARS OF PASTORAL LEADERSHIP TO NINE CHURCHES IN MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, on September 13, 2009, Morton United Methodist Church honored Reverend John Carter and years of his service to the United Methodist Church and the years he spent as pastor of Morton United Methodist Church; and

     WHEREAS, Reverend Carter recently celebrated his 93rd birthday on August 20, 2009, and retired "officially" during the 2009 Annual Methodist Conference; and

     WHEREAS, in the more than 60 years Reverend Carter served in the ministry, he served Morton United Methodist Church during the 1970s and provided pastoral leadership to nine churches in Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, from 1949-1983, Reverend Carter pastored churches in Puckett, Burns, Boling Street in Jackson, Heidelberg, East Long Beach in Pascagoula, Leavell Woods in Jackson, Morton and Raleigh.  Since 1988, he has continued to serve, pastoring Lodebar United Methodist Church preceding his recent official retirement; and

     WHEREAS, as a minister, Reverend Carter fulfilled God's call in his life with faithfulness and obedience.  Supported by his beloved, late wife Edith, Reverend Carter experienced joy in every congregation he served as a pastor, proclaiming God's word, encouraging spiritual growth, baptizing new members, sharing times of joy, and providing comfort in times of trouble, loss, and sickness; and

     WHEREAS, at this celebration, letters and messages of encouragement and good wishes to Reverend Carter from former church members, friends and colleagues were delivered to him; and it is with great pride that we join the pastorate of the nine churches served by Reverend Carter in honoring his service and leadership:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and salute Reverend John Carter for his many years of dedicated service as Pastor of Morton United Methodist Church and his 60 years of pastoral leadership to nine churches in central Mississippi.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Reverend Carter, forwarded to his many friends at Morton United Methodist Church and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
