Senate Concurrent Resolution 570

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE WILK-AMITE YOUTH ACTION NETWORK, INC., AS A COMMITTED YOUTH DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION IN OUR STATE AND FOR DEVELOPING YOUTH PROGRAMS IN WILKERSON AND AMITE COUNTIES, MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, the Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, Inc., in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, is a youth development organization whose mission is to provide the structure and leadership in support of the community through youth-oriented programs in Wilkinson and Amite Counties and to provide the environment where tomorrow's leaders can build character, self-esteem and self-confidence.  Through its partnership with governmental and community organizations and a committed volunteer staff focused on recreational, educational and developmental needs of youth.  The Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, Inc., advocates that every child should be provided an opportunity to shape his/her character, self-esteem, self-confidence, reach their full potential and become a productive member of society; and

     WHEREAS, the Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, Inc., Programs includes the following: 

       Marvin E. Haynes Community Baseball/Softball League and Wilkinson County Wildcats Youth Football and Cheerleader Program; based on an analysis of the concerns of residents, businesses and elected officials in Wilkinson and Amite counties, the Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, Inc., determined that there is a need for after-school and summer youth programming for school-age youth.  Factors contributing to this need is the large percentage of working parents that limits the number of families who are able to provide parental supervision for their children in the hours after school and during summer months.  Additionally, law enforcement reports indicate that in the after-school hours and summer months youth are at greater risk of participating in delinquent acts or becoming a victim of crime;

       Camp Van Dorn World War II Museum Community Service Project; in appreciation for the support that it received from the community, the Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, Inc., assists in fundraising for the Camp Van Dorn World War II Museum.  In addition to expressing gratitude, this community service project helps teach our youth responsibility, helps them to become community minded, helps them to learn good citizenship, helps them feel good about themselves and know they can make a difference in their community;

       Operation Reading is Key; is an initiative in cooperation and under the guidance of the Wilkinson County School District Superintendent.  The Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, Inc., in efforts to increase student achievements, works with current and former educators to implement the initiative and requires its youth participants between the ages of 6 and 12 to take part in the reading initiative; and

     WHEREAS, the Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, Inc., is staffed with dedicated volunteers and was recently honored by the Town of Centreville, Wilkinson County Board of Supervisors and Wilkinson County School Board for its work with the youth.  In addition to collaborating with local governmental entities, it partners with local and national organizations; Southern Independent Youth Football and Cheerleader League, Wilkinson County Industrial Development Authority; and USA Heads UP Football to provide programs to accommodate the needs of the youth.  The Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, Inc., funding sources include donations from businesses, civic organizations, churches and individuals who believe in taking "Personal Responsibility In creating a Desired Environment (PRIDE)"; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we salute the Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, Inc.'s Board of Directors and Volunteer Staff for providing a critical need to the youth of Southwest Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and commend the Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, Inc., in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, as a committed youth development organization in our state, and extend our best wishes to the Volunteer Staff and Board of Directors of this exemplary organization.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, Inc., and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
