A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND SALUTING MRS. FANNIE MAE WELLS GRISHAM OF INGOMAR, MISSISSIPPI, ON THE OCCASION OF HER 102ND BIRTHDAY.
WHEREAS, one hundred two years ago began the amazing journey of Mrs. Fannie Mae Wells Grisham, originally of Union County and now a resident of Ingomar, Mississippi. She was 102 years old on January 19, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Fannie Mae Wells Grisham was born on January 19, 1912, to Fannie Coward Wells and Clem Calloway Wells in Union County, Mississippi. She had 7 full siblings and 11 half-siblings. Her mother passed away when she was four days old. She lived in Ingomar, Mississippi, with her aunt and uncle until she was three years old. They moved to Blytheville, Arkansas, where they lived until she was seven years old. They moved back to Ingomar and she still resides there today. She married George Lee Grisham on December 8, 1929, and they have two children, John W. Grisham and Fairy (Sis) Dorrough; 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, with another one on the way; and
WHEREAS, Fannie Mae is a member of Fredonia Baptist Church which she and her husband helped build. She worked at the shirt factory in New Albany for a while and loved working in the field picking cotton and gardening. She loves sports and listens to ballgames on the radio (especially Ingomar games); and
WHEREAS, Fannie Mae contributes her longevity to hard work. She said that "people who are lazy don't live to be this old"; and
WHEREAS, during her lifetime everyone who has had the honor of meeting her has been blessed by being in her presence and gaining the wisdom and knowledge that she offers. Mrs. Grisham was born when William Howard Taft was President of the United States of America and Earl L. Brewer was Governor of the State of Mississippi. Mrs. Grisham's life has spanned the administration of 18 United States Presidents from Taft to Barack Obama; 36 United States Attorneys General; and 25 Mississippi Governors from Earl L. Brewer to Phil Bryant. This family icon has witnessed many historic events during her lifetime, including the invention of the automobile by Henry Ford, the Wright Brothers' first airplane flight and man's walk on the moon. We join her descendants and are indeed blessed to share life with her:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and salute Mrs. Fannie Mae Wells Grisham of Ingomar, Mississippi, on the occasion of her 102nd birthday, and extend our best wishes on this auspicious event.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Mrs. Grisham and her family, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
