A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE PROFESSIONAL AND CIVIC CONTRIBUTIONS OF DR. DEWEY HANDY OF JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, noted optometrist Dr. Dewey Handy of Jackson, Mississippi, is a very active member of his profession and community whose civic and charitable contributions are a model to the citizens of his state; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Handy has served on the Mississippi Optometric Association (MOA) Board of Directors and chaired the MOA's Low Vision Committee from 1996 to 2001.  He is also a member of the American Optometric Association, the National Optometric Association (NOA) and the Mississippi Board of Optometry.  The Mississippi Optometric Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the eye health and vision care of Mississippians through the practice of optometry.  Its membership includes more than 196 optometrists from across the state; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Handy earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics and a Master of Science Degree in Chemistry from Jackson State University and was awarded his Doctor of Optometry from the University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Optometry in 1979; and

     WHEREAS, after working in optometry in New Orleans, he returned to Jackson to teach physics and open a private practice.  While continuing to maintain a thriving practice, he serves as adjunct faculty member at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, and a preceptor for fourth-year students from the college; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Handy is very active in the community and has worked with hundreds of children through his volunteer efforts with the Boy Scouts as a classroom sponsor for Barr Elementary School and by conducting vision screenings at local schools.  He also gives presentations on eye care and participates in high school career days.  He was Medical Advisor for Preserve Sight Mississippi from 1999 to 2001; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Handy has received numerous awards for his professional and community achievements, including the Whitney Young Jr. Service Award, the Silver Beaver Award and District Award of Merit from the Boy Scouts; National Optometric Association's Optometrist of the Year Award; the Humanitarian Award from Mississippi Minority Development Week; and the Hometown Hero Award; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Handy is a member of Central United Methodist Church, where he sings in the choir and teaches Sunday school; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Handy was named a finalist for the James P. Brownlee Optometrist of the Year, an award given annually by the Mississippi Optometric Association to recognize significant contributions to the profession of optometry and the general public; and it is with great pride that we recognize the contributions of this Mississippian who has brought honor to his profession and to his state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and commend the professional and civic contributions of Dr. Dewey Handy of Jackson, Mississippi, and extend to him and his family our best wishes for his future success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Dr. Dewey Handy, forwarded to the Mississippi Optometric Association and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
