Senate Concurrent Resolution 533

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE BROOKHAVEN ACADEMY "COUGARS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH TRIPP MCCARTY FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS (MAIS) AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, in an outstanding performance, the Brookhaven Academy "Cougars" Football Team (11-4) won their first State Championship since 2009 by beating Marshall Academy for the MAIS AA State Championship on November 23, 2013, at Millsaps College Harper Davis Field; and

     WHEREAS, "Our team just didn't panic even when we were 3-4 during the middle of the year," Brookhaven Academy Coach Tripp McCarty said.  "We just wanted to do something special."  Senior quarterback Gage Posey, who has passed for 2,828 yards with 22 touchdowns and rushed for 738 yards with 17 touchdowns, led the Brookhaven Academy spread offense.  "Gage is a great leader for us," Coach McCarty said.  "He is the type of kid you want to be leading your football team."  Seth Rushing has 1,159 yards receiving for the season with 7 touchdowns for the Cougars; and

     WHEREAS, the mission at Brookhaven Academy is to provide a Christian-based, college preparatory curriculum in which each student is challenged to achieve excellence and mature spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically; and

     WHEREAS, Brookhaven Academy Cougars 2012 Football Team roster:  Team Members:  Jacob Boyd, Caleb Brown, Matt Byrd, Zach Carr, John Taylor Cline, John Ethan Coleman, Jacob Conley, Colby Culbertson, Carter Culbertson, Connor Dorman, Cory Eckhoff, Matthew Evans, Michael Fiorella, Ross Foreman, Brye Foster, Collin Hall, Heath Hickman, Will Hickman, Joseph Jones, Ryan Kimble, Ben McCarroll, Parker Myrick, Kevin Nettles, Landon Nettles, Garrett Pace, Tanner Parvin, Wyatt Pepper, Drew Philipp, Gage Posey, Preston Rawls, Seth Rushing, Joey Rushing, Taylor Rutland, Hunter Sasser, Tramel Shedd, Alex Smith, Adam Stewart and Cody Thornhill; Head Coach Tripp McCarty; Assistant Coaches:  Johnny Lane Ball, David Gilbert, Andrew Hickman and Will Lucas; Student Assistants:  Drake Flowers, Susanna Ratcliff, Allison Livingston and Allyson Barry; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 2012 Brookhaven Academy Football Team and Head Coach Tripp McCarty for winning the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools AA State Championship, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future athletic and academic successes.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Tripp McCarty and Brookhaven Academy Headmaster Julie Wright, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
