A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MISS BLACK MISSISSIPPI 2016 ROBIN Y. JACKSON FROM JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, WHO PLACED SECOND RUNNER-UP AT THE 48TH ANNUAL NATIONAL MISS BLACK AMERICA PAGEANT.

WHEREAS, we honor Robin Y. Jackson, Miss Black Mississippi 2016. Robin is 22 years old and currently attends Jackson State University, where she will be graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science. She was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. Robin has been blessed with a wonderful support system of family, friends and church members; and

WHEREAS, as Miss Black Mississippi 2016, Robin competed in the 48th Annual National Miss Black America Pageant held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 20, 2016. She placed in the Top Three as Second Runner-Up and also received the Miss Positivity Award. This is an award that is voted on by the contestants and provided to the contestants who are the most positive and uplifting, the most friendly, helpful, encouraging, genuine and outgoing, and who have pleasant dispositions. Receiving this award is an honor; and

WHEREAS, Robin has served in various leadership positions at Jackson State University: Miss Freshman 2012-2013, Miss Sophomore 2013-2014, NAACP Secretary 2013-2014, Miss NAACP 2014-2015, Essence of a Lady Tiger, Vice President 2014-2015, and Student Government Association Community Service Director 2016, and she is a member of The Word Center; and

WHEREAS, she served as Miss Black Hinds County under the Platform "Beautiful Minds, Beautiful People" advocating the importance of mental health and self-esteem awareness. She has also engaged in many speaking opportunities around the country including Tennessee, Ohio and Louisiana; and

WHEREAS, the Miss Black Mississippi Pageant is part of the Miss Black America Pageant Organization. Founded in 1968 by J. Morris Anderson, the Miss Black America Pageant was an opportunity to celebrate women of color, who were not widely represented in the Miss America Pageant. Miss Black Mississippi 2016 Robin Jackson is a textbook in self-esteem. Robin hopes to visit Jackson Public Schools in the near future and encourage young girls that it's ok to "be natural and confident." She is also looking to organize a conference centered on empowerment; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this talented young Mississippi citizen who has brought honor to her family, her community, her university and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Miss Black Mississippi 2016 Robin Y. Jackson from Jackson, Mississippi, who placed Second Runner-Up at the 48th Annual National Miss Black America Pageant, and extend our best wishes for success during her reign and in her future university and career endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Robin Y. Jackson and her family, forwarded to the President of Jackson State University and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
