Senate Concurrent Resolution 531
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION DESIGNATING APRIL 19, 2010, AS "PATRIOTS DAY IN MISSISSIPPI" TO COMMEMORATE THE BEGINNING OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION.
WHEREAS, April 19, 1775, marks a significant day in the history and founding of our great nation; and
WHEREAS, that on this date, British regular troops assembled with the intent of confiscating local militia's arms in the Town of Concord, Massachusetts; and
WHEREAS, in the early morning hours a call to arms was sounded by Paul Revere, William Dawes and Dr. Samuel Prescott, by riding on horseback through the countryside and warning of this imminent act of suppression; and
WHEREAS, minutemen, militia and colonists responded to this alarm by assembling at the Village Green in Lexington, and the North Bridge in Concord to resist the advance of the British column; and
WHEREAS, the ensuing engagement led to the "shot heard 'round the world," by determined militia, and news of these events led to a galvanization of public opinion in favor of the American Colonies gaining independence from England; and
WHEREAS, Patriots Day is a recognized holiday in the states of Alabama, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Tennessee and Wisconsin and the effort is being made to establish it in every state of our union; and
WHEREAS, one of the aims of the Mississippi Society of the Sons of the American Revolution is to preserve the memory of our ancestors, by supporting efforts and events that remind our fellow citizens of the significant struggle and sacrifice made by these patriots to establish this great country:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we join the Mississippi Society of the Sons of the American Revolution in commemorating the beginning of the American Revolution by designating April 19, 2010, as "Patriots Day in Mississippi" and urge all public schools, colleges and universities and political subdivisions of the state to participate in appropriate patriotic activities.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be transmitted to the Mississippi Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Mississippi Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the State Board of Education, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
