A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE GERMANTOWN HIGH SCHOOL BAND AND BAND DIRECTOR JUSTIN HARVISON FOR WINNING THE MHSAA/MBA 2013 CLASS 5A STATE MARCHING BAND CHAMPIONSHIP WITH THE HIGHEST SCORE IN THE HISTORY OF THE COMPETITION.

     WHEREAS, after roughly 375 hours of practice, 7 half-time, pregame performances, 39 full runs of the show and 5 competitions, the Germantown High School Band finished this marathon season as the Mississippi High School Activities Association/Mississippi Bandmasters Association 5A State Champions; and

     WHEREAS, the band set a new record as the highest score in the history of the Class 5A Division MHSAA/MBA Championship with a composite score of 96.5.  Additionally, categories the Germantown High School Band won are as follows:  1st Place Music Performance; 1st Place Visual Performance; 1st Place General Effect; and 1st Place Percussion.  The 2013 Germantown High School Band is undefeated in Class 5A; and

     WHEREAS, the Germantown Band Program has been in existence since 2011 and has since enjoyed extensive accomplishments and awards including all-superior ratings in marching, concert and sight reading, as well as placing as a Medalist in the Mississippi Bandmasters State Marching Championships; and

     WHEREAS, the Germantown High School Band Program includes the Germantown High School Marching Band, the Symphonic Band, the Concert Band, the Jazz Band, Indoor Percussion and Winter Guards; and

     WHEREAS, the band is proud of its first-ever Mississippi Lions All-State Band Members:  Jason Smith, Trumpet; Matt Stanford, Percussion; Rebekah Pfau, Clarinet; and Wesley Dillard, Trombone.  (This is the 29th time the Mississippi Lion's All-State Band has won an International Championship); and

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi High School Activities Association and the Mississippi Bandmasters Association began having this series of competitions 10 years ago.  This State Title honors the Germantown Band program's history in musical excellence; and

     WHEREAS, with a motto of "Building Tradition Through Innovation," these students have persevered to achieve the highest honor attainable within the two associations' honors and awards; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the special accomplishments and attitude of this outstanding group of student musicians, who have brought honor to their school, their parents, their community, their sponsors and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Germantown High School Band and its directors upon winning the 2013 Class 5A State Marching Band Championship, and extend our best wishes for continued success in their future musical and academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Band Director Justin Harvison, Germantown Principal Ted Moore, forwarded to the Madison County School District Board of Education, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
