A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION DESIGNATING FEBRUARY 12, 2020, AS THE "WORLD CHOLANGIOCARCINOMA DAY" IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI TO BRING AWARENESS TO CHOLANGIOCARCINOMA OR BILE DUCT CANCER.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     WHEREAS, Cholangiocarcinoma, or bile duct cancer, is a rare form of cancer that originates from the cells lining the bile ducts that play a key role in digestion.  There are three types:  intrahepatic, extrahepatic and perihilar; and

     WHEREAS, approximately 12,000 Americans are diagnosed each year in the United States with numbers increasing yearly.  The mortality rate has increased dramatically in the last decade; and

     WHEREAS, patients are typically diagnosed at a late stage due to no validated early method of detection.  Symptoms of jaundice, abdominal pain, itchy skin and weight loss are symptoms that do not usually present until advanced disease progression; and

     WHEREAS, Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare cancer.  Of the top eight deadliest cancers, seven are rare.  Rare cancers have a five-year survival rate under fifty percent with the cholangiocarcinoma five-year survival rate being approximately twenty percent.  Cholangiocarcinoma currently has no cure; and

     WHEREAS, Cholangiocarcinoma/Bile Duct Cancer Awareness is represented by the color kelly green; and

     WHEREAS, foundations, research and teaching hospitals, rare cancer advocate groups and patient advocate groups from around the globe have joined forces to declare and recognize February 12th of each year as "World Cholangiocarcinoma Day"; and

     WHEREAS, increased cholangiocarcinoma advocacy, awareness, research and education will bring improved outcomes for patients in earlier detection and treatment and potential curative methods:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and designate February 12, 2020, as "World Cholangiocarcinoma Day" in Mississippi and encourage all citizens to join in bringing awareness to the effects of cholangiocarcinoma or bile duct cancer.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the Mississippi Chapter of the American Cancer Society, forwarded to the State Board of Health for appropriate distribution to the citizens of our state, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
