Senate Concurrent Resolution 522

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE CORINTH HIGH SCHOOL "WARRIORS" BOYS GOLF TEAM FOR WINNING ITS SECOND CONSECUTIVE MHSAA CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Corinth High School "Warriors" Boys Golf Team defended their Class 3A State Championship in easy fashion, claiming a 30-stroke victory in the two-day event held at Reunion Golf and Country Club.  The Championship is the eighth for the program, the last six coming in Class 3A.  Corinth will compete in Class 4A for the next two school years after being classified a Class 3A school since 1996-1997; and

WHEREAS, "P.J. Platt is our only senior and we have some others lined up ready to go," said Coach Keith Greene, who has been a part of three titles; and

WHEREAS, in addition to claiming the team title, Corinth High School earned another championship off the club of Platt.  The senior took home medalist honors with a two-day total of 156.  Platt opened with a 77 and carded a 79 in the final round to become Corinth's third individual champion, joining Bradley Bumpas (1988) and Josh Webb (2006).  Corinth took a 23-shot lead over eventual runner-up Forest following first-round play.  The Warriors dropped eight strokes of their first 18-hole total, but still finished with a 30-stroke advantage; and

WHEREAS, the State Title marked the 45th Team Championship for Corinth and second this school year along with boys' cross-country; and

     WHEREAS, team scoring:  P.J. Platt 77-79, 156; Alex Tull 84-76, 160; Blake Farris 77-87, 164; Collin Burns 79-87, 166; John Mathis 89-83, 172; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this special achievement by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and the State of Mississippi:

WHEREAS, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Corinth High School "Warriors" Boys Golf Team for winning the 2011 Mississippi High School Athlete Association Class 3A State Championship, their second consecutive State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors on this occasion.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Greene for the team, forwarded to Corinth High School Principal Russ Elam and to the members of the Corinth School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
